Railworks

I appreciate that some of you have been waiting (patiently) for the promised announcements concerning Rail Simulator. This brief note outlines the key points of our strategy - we'll be elaborating this in the coming weeks.
Over the past few months, we have been planning the future direction of Rail Simulator and as part of that process, we have analysed your feedback and assessed our position in the competitive marketplace. Based on this analysis, I am pleased to announce that we will be releasing Rail Simulator 2: RailWorks (working title!) in June 2009.
RailWorks will represent a new approach to simulation. Instead of providing a product, we are attempting to provide you with a platform on which you can build and operate virtual railways. We will continue to support and develop this platform over the coming months and years, adding new features to make the simulated environment ever more compelling. We will also be focusing on a number of facilities to allow you to share and even trade elements of your virtual world with other users.
Unlike Rail Simulator, RailWorks will include all the tools that were previously downloaded separately. In addition, for those of you who are online, we also plan to make use of Valve’s ‘Steam’ technology to simplify the process of supporting and upgrading the product. Don’t worry, we’ve worked hard to ensure compatibility with content created with Rail Simulator and will continue to make backward compatibility a key priority.
There will be one world-wide version of RailWorks that will include improved versions of all the routes currently in the European and North American version of Rail Simulator. In addition, we will have new routes and new locomotives along with new scenarios and significant graphical advancements. I don’t want to say too much about the new routes now, other than that one is North American, one European and one UK based. These are in the later stages of development and all are looking very impressive. I’m confident that you are going to enjoy them all.
With the launch of the RailWorks platform, we continue to demonstrate our long-term commitment to the rail simulation community. We have listened to your feedback and created RailWorks to better meet your needs.
So, to summarise: I appreciate that we’ve been quiet (thanks for your patience!), we’ve spent the last couple of months restructuring the business, realigning our product releases to meet the changed competitive environment and establishing new ways of distributing the product. Rail Simulator 2: RailWorks will provide a single platform for all of our customers with an exciting set of new content and features.
Everyone at RSDL remains committed to this hobby and going forward we want to work with as many of you as possible to make an even better product. In the coming weeks we’ll tell you more about:
* The new routes
* The new locomotives
* The new distribution channels
* The reorganized company (but don’t worry, Derek and the boys will still need biscuits, so keep the supplies coming!)
* The improvements we’ve made
* The New features for sharing content

Rail Simulator 2: RailWorks Interview
«
Reply #1 on:
Friday 03 April, 2009, 21:24:48 »
Following from the announcement of Rail Simulator 2: RailWorks last week, Tim Gatland answers some of the questions you have raised in the following interview and includes some of the first screenshots!
What are the key reasons for releasing Rail Simulator 2:RailWorks?
The key reasons for releasing RailWorks now include:
* Providing a single common platform for users across the globe
* To better control the distribution of the product
* To provide a more powerful system for upgrades, maintenance and additional features in the future.
Which routes and trains will be offered in RailWorks?
The existing five routes: Bath-Templecombe, Oxford-Paddington, York-Newcastle, Hagen-Siegen and Barstow-San Bernardino. The Hagen-Siegen route has been significantly revised and you’ll find noticeable improvements in the other routes.
New routes are based in Europe, UK and North America. We’ve taken a different approach with these routes and really focused on creating environments that provide fun operations to demonstrate what is possible within Rail Simulator. We think you’re really going to like them.
Rolling stock will include:
* ES44AC
* SD40-2
* Black 5 4-6-0
* SDJR 7F 2-8-0
* IC125 High Speed Train
* Class 166 DMU
* Class 47
* Class 55 Deltic
* DB BR101
* DB BR294
* NEW Class 37
* NEW European locomotive
* NEW North American locomotive
There will also be a host of new scenarios for all included routes.
Will add-ons for Rail Simulator be compatible with Rail Simulator 2: RailWorks?
Given how many assets RSDL have built for Rail Simulator, we’d be crazy not to have compatibility at the top of our agenda. So, while it is always hard to guarantee that there will be no compatibility issues, we have worked very hard to reduce any potential problems.
I can’t find Rail Simulator in the shops, will I be able to get RailWorks?
We understand these frustrations and this has been one of our major motivators in changing the distribution strategy for RailWorks. We have already announced our intention to distribute digitally via Steam and we will soon be announcing our physical media distribution partners.
Will EA still be the publisher?
We are in the final stages of selecting publishing partners. It is possible that they may distribute in some specific territories, but unlikely that they will distribute worldwide in the way that they did for the existing version of Rail Simulator.
I can’t afford 3D Studio Max. Will this be fixed in RailWorks?
We recognize that the tools we use at RSDL, such as 3D Studio Max, are very expensive and complex for non-professional users.
We are working closely with other parties to improve support for integration with other tool sets which are more accessible and also less expensive; more in depth information on this will be available soon. We have also commissioned additional work to improve the interaction with 3DSM and this will deliver better visual effects in RailWorks
However, the increased graphical realism available in Rail Simulator does mean that greater expertise is required to create content, so we continue to look for ways of making this process easier through tutorials and documentation.
Will I have to spend £30.00 buying a new copy of RailWorks?
Although we are still finalizing the pricing structure for RailWorks, we will offer existing users of Rail Simulator the opportunity to upgrade for a very modest price.
Will RSDL continue to provide patches and upgrades to Rail Simulator after RailWorks has been released?
We are confident that the committed users of Rail Simulator will migrate to RailWorks and therefore avoid the need for further patches to the old product. We do not want to divide our effort between supporting RailWorks and Rail Simulator.
I don’t want to use Steam. Is this mandatory with RailWorks?
Steam is becoming widely used and accepted by a huge number of PC users. However, if you do not want to use Steam, it will be possible to use the product without this facility. It will be harder for us to make corrections available and so you will probably lag in receiving fixes and upgrades, but we will provide an alternate way of doing this if demand necessitates.
What are RSDL doing after RailWorks?
We see the release of RailWorks as providing a springboard for further development of the Rail Simulator product range. Obviously we want more and better content for regions not yet covered, also we want to take advantage of some of the technical features now available in PCs and networks to provide new gameplay and collaboration features. We have a whole host of new ideas for the product – RailWorks gives us the environment to achieve these goals in an incremental way.

Rail Simulator 2: RailWorks Feature Update
«
Reply #4 on:
Friday 29 May, 2009, 20:03:50 »
Dear Rail Simulator Enthusiasts
As we approach the RailWorks release on 12th June a number of you have been asking what the key features are that make it stand out against previous simulators.
Well the first thing to say is that we have set out with an entirely new idea about what it is to be a "Simulator". The team have worked hard to integrate our technology into Steam. Some of you will have first hand experience of Steam already, some of you won't. Essentially Steam provides a secure mechanism for both delivering and updating our software as well as a wealth of other features. It already has over 20 million customers and the enhancements in technology are considerable (for more information about visit
About Steam
). Steam was selected because it is well suited to our long-term strategy for RailWorks. Unlike most other software, RailWorks will not be a static piece of software with an add-on every now and then, as we have been used to in the past, but a dynamic, constantly improving platform that will keep everyone in the world up to date and in sync with one another. In other words, your copy of RailWorks will have identical core features to everyone else’s. Over time we have a rolling and flexible program of advancements and new features planned that we expect to be delivering over the coming months and years. I say flexible because whilst we have our own ideas about what the platform can do, we will be receptive to what our customers are asking for and what new technologies allow us to deliver.
In addition to the features available in Rail Simulator, RailWorks includes but is not limited to:
* The Dispatcher has been improved with added functionality including error reporting for problematic scenarios and further enhanced AI traffic handling.
* The physics engine of RailWorks includes detailed modelling of coupling slack and absorption between rail vehicles. Experience the jolting of unbraked freight and take care to manage the motion of your train through crests and dips to ensure the ensuing dynamic forces don’t break couplings!
* The first stage of dynamic steam effects have been achieved in RailWorks. Smoke effects have been tied in with the motion of the locomotive to realistically blast steam as the train accelerates.
* The ability to manually input the number of your choice onto rolling stock. Not only this, but new locomotives also features the ability to define head codes, and destination boards and even nameplates.
* The German signalling system provided with RailWorks has been completed re-written from scratch with much greater extensibility for future expansion. New features include accurate block signalling on plain line sections, correctly measured spacing, marker signage warning of approaching equipment and also shunting aspects to allow great scenario and operational diversity.
We have included graphical advancements both to our technology and the routes that make the simulated world much richer, more exciting and smoother.
* New routes and content that we have included in the core simulator. Each of the new routes has been especially designed to not only provide a new take on the gaming experience but also exhibit particular aspects of our new software.
* We have spent considerable time and effort in creating an in game WIKI with literally hundreds of pages of manuals, working guides etc to allow you to really bring out the best in the simulation and tools.
*The number input must be in the context of the vehicle being edited.
Finally I want to tell you a little about our vision for the RailWorks platform going forward. This year we are building a new driver interface option that we believe will deliver significant improvements to the realism of the driving experience. We are looking to continue the graphical advances to such things as lighting/lights and the sky dome, whilst further increasing the practical draw distances we have already made. Information outputs will be moved on with plans for schedule prints and video outputting. Further thinking is also going into how, and how far an element of economic and commerce simulation might be desirable and also online play capabilities.
We will have more to say before the twelfth, but hopefully that is a reasonable summation of where we are at today.
Warm regards
Paul Jackson - CEO RailSimulator.com

Foliage Pack released as Bonus Content to RailWorks
«
Reply #10 on:
Tuesday 11 August, 2009, 20:20:03 »
Encompassing over 100 items of vegetation, this Bonus Content adds lush diversity to any scene. Fields, woodland, forests and gardens make up a huge percentage of most routes and this new content adds many new varieties of flowers, ferns, trees and bushes to the existing scenery library.
Designed with efficiency in mind, the foliage can be used for large area cover, which saves on both placement time and resources used, as well as containing single assets for more detailed placement.
All assets have seasonal variants, are pre-enabled for use scenarios and many have grouped configurations for bulk, fast placement. Also included is a selection of linear distant foliage items for easy filling of background areas.
From high detailed trackside weeds to single large forests, this new Bonus Content is a great advantage for all RailWorks users.

Railworks - Stanier Jubilee Released
«
Reply #13 on:
Monday 31 August, 2009, 11:40:31 »
The Stanier Jubilee steam locomotive, famously named in 1935 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V, was one of the first fully fledged standardised locomotive fleets for LMS designed by William Stanier. Becoming the main stay of passenger traffic operating out of London Euston and surviving the war (barely) the Jubilees were granted one last reprive by appearing in BR Green before their final curtain call. Bought back to life in RailWorks, this famous Class can once again ride the rails.
The Stanier Jubilee Steam Locomotive add-on includes two liveries, British Rail Black and British Rail Green, as well as three Mk1 coaches.
Five scenarios are also included to experience the Jubilee locomotives first hand.
* Home Counties Return
* Inner Workings
* Get Ready
* Free Roams around Radstock & York

Rascal and Cottonwood, the popular American route from Richard Garber is now available for RailWorks via steam.
This fictional coal themed route contains 11 scenarios allowing you to explore the richly detailed environment between the mining towns of Rascal and Cottonwood . Supplied with numerous custom objects to give it a truly distinctive appearance, Rascal and Cottonwood makes a fine addition to the stable of routes for RailWorks allowing complex freight operation in the heart of North America.

Railworks - Introducing the 4900 'Hall' Class
«
Reply #15 on:
Tuesday 08 September, 2009, 00:40:09 »
The GWR "Hall" class locomotive pack is coming soon to RailWorks. The "Hall" class was in operation until the last days of steam, phased out due to the increasing popularity of diesel. As such they are synonymous with the end of the steam era and make a wonderful addition beside the exisiting steam and diesel locomotives already available for RailWorks.
The "Hall" addon pack will contain locomtives in both the BR black and GWR green liveries, with custom nameplates and shed codes as well a set of Mk1 passenger coaches in GWR livery. To experience the "Hall" in operation there are five story-driven scenarios plus one free roam allowing you to explore at your leisure.

The GWR Hall 4-6-0 Locomotive RailWorks Add-on is now available worldwide on Steam.
The Great Western Railway 4900 Hall Class is a mixed traffic steam locomotives designed by Charles Collett. Their range of duties fully justified this classification with them being found on almost any passenger and freight services, with the exception of small branch lines. Being the inspiration for a generation of subsequent Steam locomotive designs, the GWR Hall should be part of every RailWorks collection.

Railworks - Colton and Northern Coming Soon
«

Colton & Northern, the second route from All Aboard, will soon be available via Steam. This North American line is richly detailed with 30 industries and over a hundred spurs providing plenty of switching opportunities as well as a 40 minute mainline run.
Set between the communities of Westin and Colton the route has a detailed history. Westin wanted their trains to go north. Colton wanted their trains to go south. So how did these two cities ever meet? It's a long story. But it happened and today railroading on the Colton & Northern is a throwback to good old fashion railroading!
The beautiful scenery contains custom models and the route is supplied with over 20 scenarios, so there is much to do from the off. It is time to roll up your sleeves and get dirty!

The Colton & Northern RailWorks Expansion Pack is now available on Steam.
Richard Garber of All Aboard has raised the bar once again with his second excellent and immersive American route for RailWorks. This time set against the back drop of two completely disconnected towns coming together over the formation of a railroad to extract newly discovered raw materials from the area.
Colton & Northern comes with over 20 scenarios, once again showcasing a real mix of tasks and settings.
This Expansion Pack requires the base game RailWorks in order to play.

Coming soon to RailWorks on Steam are two fantastic heavy weight US steamers - The Nickel Plate 2-8-4 'Berkshire' and the SP&S 4-8-4 'Northern' Locomotives. Developed by G-Trax Simulations, these huge steam locomotives are a must for any US Railroad fan.
Berkshires
The New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, popularly known as the Nickel Plate Road, is famous for its powerful and beautiful Berkshire locomotives. The railroad purchased 15 of the 2-8-4 locomotives from ALCo in 1934. Between 1942 and 1949, an additional 65 units were acquired from Lima.
Northerns
In 1938, the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway took delivery of three Baldwin 4-8-4 locomotives, numbered 700, 701 and 702. These locomotives, designated as class E-1 Northerns, were identical in design to the Northern Pacific A-3 except that they burned oil instead of coal. The SP&S Northerns operated at a tractive effort of 69,800 lbs and weighed 485,500 lbs. Locomotive SP&S 700 is owned by the City of Portland, Oregon, and is maintained and operated by the Pacific Railroad Preservation Association.
